    Bad Ass Women

Sarah Bonner: ex-party girl turned vegan triathlete. Canadian expat living in Banyoles, Catalonia, Spain. Triathlon Vitoria: First Pro Podium!

Eleven weeks ago I was on the ground in tears waiting for an ambulance. A car blitzed through a stop sign, knocked me off my bike, and just like that life was very different. To an outsider, it was a forgettable accident: I didn’t break any bones, there was nonpermanent damage, and so life goes on. For me, it was life changing and it completely consumed me. I couldn’t walk, sit down, or stand up by myself. I couldn’t turn my head and, with torn intercostal muscles, every sing

    So here’s what happened…

It’s been five weeks. I was putting away a freshly folded cycling jersey and it became clear how bad things were. I had been “staying positive”, constantly telling myself how lucky I was, how things could have been much worse, that I was fine and I would power through whatever I had to—and all of that was true—but suddenly I could see past those coping lines. Holy shit. I was just going 800m. I jumped on my city bike and I remember consciously deciding to take the back road b

Racing in Africa: East London 70.3

It’s also far from your expectations. Somewhere in between the enchanting giraffe-roaming natural landscape pictured in travel magazines and the nation’s complicated history, is East London. It’s not a place you dream of going but add “Ironman 70.3” to it’s name and it becomes a destination for the swim, bike, run crowd. Once you’ve done a few triathlons you can go through registration, bike check-in, and the race briefing with your eyes closed. But this is Africa so we quick

    Alpe d’Huez DNF

I stared out the window at the massive peaks, taking a minute to locate myself on the planet and appreciate the sublime beauty of the Alpe d’Huez valley. The car swung around hairpin the and with it my mind back to reality. As we descended, so did my perspective. I felt like a joke. It was my first self-induced DNF. I had those letters on results sheets before but only for major mechanicals. It was a slow decision. An idea that my brain had quickly calculated after taking in

    A Sign to Somewhere

“A sign!” I sang out loud in a melodic mix of relief and excitement. I wasn’t really, truly lost. Every now and then I could see the tree-cleared ski run on the mountain next to me.  I could hear a river. I had drawn a mental map and I was still kind of moving in, what I thought, was the right direction. I could always back-track too. Still, I felt so elated I hugged the wooden post. Thinking you’re on the right track is a whole different experience than knowing you’re on the

    The Seville 69

“You’ve been disqualified!” Edward shouted at me from the sidelines as I laid on the cement, feeling the adrenaline and pain surge through me. In what universe was this situation ever imagined? First, let’s back up. I was in Seville for the Sevilla-Itálica half iron distance triathlon. It was a small local event that fit perfectly into my calendar to top off winter training and get me into race mode for the start of my 2017 season. Pre-race was a wash of Spanish but, regardle

    Bedar and Back

Should I keep moving forward? Suddenly I was questioning my direction and feeling completely lost. My mind was a constant knot of questioning as I tried to get my bearings. When in doubt, up. It was “the big climb” around Mojacar. The visiting pro teams did their training camp testing there, the Strava KOM was highly contested and, more importantly, it was exactly what I needed. Ten kilometres of climbing would be long enough, I figured. Long enough to feel the work in my leg

    Happy <del>New Year</del> Today

It was January 1st. The beach bar across the street was still pumping music and with the squint of one eye I hit my phone: 6:13 am. The bars in my Spanish coastal town close at 6am so any minute the soundtrack of the night would finally give way to the standard metronomic crash of waves. I rolled over in annoyance. My stomach churned. My skin prickled. I was full of regret. I wanted to start the new year off running, literally. Or riding or swimming. In my physical condition,

    My Favourite Breakfast

Mashed banana is a great option instead of yogurt and, since you can change up what goes on top, it never gets boring. The almond butter is what elevates this breakfast to stellar but if you don’t have any, straight up banana mash is a close second. Thawed frozen berries are great way to keep berries in your diet year round. A dash of cinnamon can be a welcome addition when partnered with apples. Pecans are a must try! Going on the road? Put all the dry ingredients together i

    VIDEO: Running Mont Blanc

It was two degrees in Chamonix but I had a mountain to run up. From the misty forest to the wind-swept open rocks at Plan du l’Aiguille and then, after a not-so-sneaky change in the middle of the cable car from sweaty running clothes to multiple warm layers, the iconic snowy peaks of l’Aiguille du Midi to gaze on the sublimity of Mont Blanc. For once, “epic” really does apply. #trailrunning #PlandulAiguille #triathlon #Skyrunning #Chamonix #frenchalps #Athlete #Sport #MontBla
