    Behind the Scenes of “Trailblazers”

Sitting on Mo Farrah’s couch. We were staying at Mo Farah’s house. Yes, that Mo Farah. The multiple Olympian, World Champion, winner of everything… We weren’t 100% sure but he was known for training in the area, there were a few Team GB things around the house, his name was on the mail box, and, for an AirBnB in a small mountain village, there was one heck of a treadmill. (Yeah, I ran on it). After everyone had arrived, the Tactic team explained the concept of the video serie

    A Gravel Baptism

I’m just going to get this out of the way immediately: yes, I fell. I lasted over two hours without failing to rise to the occasion of deep mud, slippery gravel descents, and rock gardens. Then, instead of taking the road, I suggested we head back to the house on a trail that I often run. Note that I said “trail” because when we turned onto the path it was not a trail. It was a river. It wasn’t just extremely muddy or washed out. There was full on flowing water connecting dee

    The Educational Coconut Cake

I could barely turn the pedals. I was lagging so far behind and my exhaustion was making me sad and angry at the same time. Edward was barely pedalling with one leg, 50 meters up the road trying his best to wait for me. He must be so annoyed, I thought to myself. For the life of me, I just couldn’t close the gap. I should’ve been on the couch, laying down, not even sitting. I couldn’t turn back now, though, there was magical cake waiting for me at the half way point. Edward h

    Bedar and Back

Should I keep moving forward? Suddenly I was questioning my direction and feeling completely lost. My mind was a constant knot of questioning as I tried to get my bearings. When in doubt, up. It was “the big climb” around Mojacar. The visiting pro teams did their training camp testing there, the Strava KOM was highly contested and, more importantly, it was exactly what I needed. Ten kilometres of climbing would be long enough, I figured. Long enough to feel the work in my leg

    Happy <del>New Year</del> Today

It was January 1st. The beach bar across the street was still pumping music and with the squint of one eye I hit my phone: 6:13 am. The bars in my Spanish coastal town close at 6am so any minute the soundtrack of the night would finally give way to the standard metronomic crash of waves. I rolled over in annoyance. My stomach churned. My skin prickled. I was full of regret. I wanted to start the new year off running, literally. Or riding or swimming. In my physical condition,

The Almost: Zell Am See 70.3

I hit the 60km mark my legs detonated into pieces and I finished the bike leg in the most unspectacular fashion. The run, the swim, both forgettable performances and yet Zell Am See 70.3 was a memorable race. Memorable because it was the “almost” I needed to experience. Among the myriad of mistakes and failures, “almost” meant there were pieces of success, parts I’m proud of, and moments that made me certain, not just believe, that more is definitely possible. #Bike #LakeZell

    Alpe d’Huez LD Triathlon

Abruptly, the race started. I hadn’t heard the official start, I just got going when everyone else did. It was a washing machine of elbows as we all merged into the racing line to swim out the 2.2 kilometres. My fate was sealed pretty quickly with so many people and a slow start. Without the skill and speed to move through the thick swarm, I eventually settled into a steady pace behind Has-To-Be-Size-11-Shoes, Mr. Arm Slap on my right and Neon Green Wetsuit Man on my left. Wi

    Highway 33

“Go up Highway 33,” Edward said. The name didn’t exactly entice. “It’s about 15km, 3-4% average gradient.”  That sounded a little more appealing. I had a long ride and tired legs so I figured a new climb would be encouraging, mentally and physically. “Okay,” I agreed, lazily kitting up for what sounded like most boring climb ever. By the time I got to the four-way stop in Ojai where the 33 started, my legs had gone from near-death to warmed up, partially thanks to the hour it

Power Couple: My New Felt IA

“I was triathlete now and a triathlete needs a triathlon bike. Something built for speed, geared for triathlon and suited to my aero needs,” I explained to myself as I left Pippi stripped down in the dark of my parent’s garage. As I left her, I felt just as alone. Putting myself in the market for a new bike was overwhelming. Things had changed since the last time I was looking. There was new technology and I no longer had to abide by UCI-rules. I was also in the market for a

    The Driveway

Chalet sweet chalet. I have a friend, Shaun Little, in Cape Town who has the steepest driveway ever. It’s really more the road to his house but that 600m must have been at least 10%, with steeper sections I’m sure. I was scared to drive up to his house for his birthday it was so steep. He even admitted to me that once he was so tired from a long ride he called the house for someone to drive down and fetch him. Well Shaun, I’ve got you beat: my driveway is a 13km HC climb with

    Muskoka 70.3: Small Victories

“Why aren’t their carpets for my princess feet?” So many pine needles… I was a bit nervous on and off leading up to Muskoka 70.3 but it wasn’t until the announcer said “60 seconds to go” that my heart jumped into my throat and my stomach flipped. Everyone was chatting, even laughing, as I stared out to the first turn buoy, hardly visible in the morning fog. I just wanted to stay in the bunch as long as possible and not swim off course. Modest goals but necessary ones. The air
