    A Sign to Somewhere

“A sign!” I sang out loud in a melodic mix of relief and excitement. I wasn’t really, truly lost. Every now and then I could see the tree-cleared ski run on the mountain next to me.  I could hear a river. I had drawn a mental map and I was still kind of moving in, what I thought, was the right direction. I could always back-track too. Still, I felt so elated I hugged the wooden post. Thinking you’re on the right track is a whole different experience than knowing you’re on the

    The Seville 69

“You’ve been disqualified!” Edward shouted at me from the sidelines as I laid on the cement, feeling the adrenaline and pain surge through me. In what universe was this situation ever imagined? First, let’s back up. I was in Seville for the Sevilla-Itálica half iron distance triathlon. It was a small local event that fit perfectly into my calendar to top off winter training and get me into race mode for the start of my 2017 season. Pre-race was a wash of Spanish but, regardle

    Highway 33

“Go up Highway 33,” Edward said. The name didn’t exactly entice. “It’s about 15km, 3-4% average gradient.”  That sounded a little more appealing. I had a long ride and tired legs so I figured a new climb would be encouraging, mentally and physically. “Okay,” I agreed, lazily kitting up for what sounded like most boring climb ever. By the time I got to the four-way stop in Ojai where the 33 started, my legs had gone from near-death to warmed up, partially thanks to the hour it

My favourite thing about running is that you don’t really need anything, just a pair of shoes. You don’t even need directions but somehow you’re feet always seem to find something: a new road, panoramic view, horses, serenity, dogs, motivation, mud, single-track, speed, the biggest hill ever, goats… Check my runs on Strava. #trailrunning #pladestany #Girona #Spain #triathlon #Banyoles #training #Athlete #Running #strava

    The Driveway

Chalet sweet chalet. I have a friend, Shaun Little, in Cape Town who has the steepest driveway ever. It’s really more the road to his house but that 600m must have been at least 10%, with steeper sections I’m sure. I was scared to drive up to his house for his birthday it was so steep. He even admitted to me that once he was so tired from a long ride he called the house for someone to drive down and fetch him. Well Shaun, I’ve got you beat: my driveway is a 13km HC climb with

The Cable. I have a very perfect agreement with my Prince Charming: I get rule of the kitchen, he takes care of bike maintenance. Yes, I live in the fantasy world where I hop on to a clean bike without lifting a finger and simply notify him of any malfunctions from a cranky derailleur to a flat tire (don’t even think about it ladies, he’s taken). In return, it’s agreed that I provide three nutritious, fresh and delicious meals a day, riding snacks, baked treats, and copious c

    Christmas Heat Wave

Usually we have a white Christmas. The best gift I received on Christmas was the weather: a tropical-feeling 6 degrees. Since returning to Canada, my training had relocated inside so six degrees felt like a formal invitation from Mother Nature to go outside and play. With newly unwrapped winter running gear already itching to be worn, I covered up, laced up and didn’t look back once at the treadmill. Christmas where I’m from is usually on the backdrop of a winter wonderland.

    The “4km” Climb

In the first week I eagerly tackled the big local mountains of Rocacorba and Del Mont. I had cruised through the ever-rolling Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa. I was loving my new hilly terrain complete with dozens of new roads that seemed to keep me climbing forever. My surroundings! Then came what is now known as the “‘4km’ climb.” A few kilometres from the house and I knew the following day needed to be a rest day. My legs were tired but, after having a few

Total Immersion Open Water Camp Lanzarote

The Lanzarote 2014 Team “Who wants to do the 5km?” We were no more than thirty minutes into the week. Granted it was a Total Immersion Open Water camp but the question wasn’t just about the distance. The blunt question was also rooted in the week’s expectations and everyone’s experience level. There were a mix of swimmers, some swimming almost daily their whole lives, others who had learned mere months ago, so there was a complete range of emotion from excitement to worry on
