    Triathlon Vitoria: First Pro Podium!

Eleven weeks ago I was on the ground in tears waiting for an ambulance. A car blitzed through a stop sign, knocked me off my bike, and just like that life was very different. To an outsider, it was a forgettable accident: I didn’t break any bones, there was nonpermanent damage, and so life goes on. For me, it was life changing and it completely consumed me. I couldn’t walk, sit down, or stand up by myself. I couldn’t turn my head and, with torn intercostal muscles, every sing

Racing in Africa: East London 70.3

It’s also far from your expectations. Somewhere in between the enchanting giraffe-roaming natural landscape pictured in travel magazines and the nation’s complicated history, is East London. It’s not a place you dream of going but add “Ironman 70.3” to it’s name and it becomes a destination for the swim, bike, run crowd. Once you’ve done a few triathlons you can go through registration, bike check-in, and the race briefing with your eyes closed. But this is Africa so we quick

    The Seville 69

“You’ve been disqualified!” Edward shouted at me from the sidelines as I laid on the cement, feeling the adrenaline and pain surge through me. In what universe was this situation ever imagined? First, let’s back up. I was in Seville for the Sevilla-Itálica half iron distance triathlon. It was a small local event that fit perfectly into my calendar to top off winter training and get me into race mode for the start of my 2017 season. Pre-race was a wash of Spanish but, regardle

The Almost: Zell Am See 70.3

I hit the 60km mark my legs detonated into pieces and I finished the bike leg in the most unspectacular fashion. The run, the swim, both forgettable performances and yet Zell Am See 70.3 was a memorable race. Memorable because it was the “almost” I needed to experience. Among the myriad of mistakes and failures, “almost” meant there were pieces of success, parts I’m proud of, and moments that made me certain, not just believe, that more is definitely possible. #Bike #LakeZell

    Alpe d’Huez LD Triathlon

Abruptly, the race started. I hadn’t heard the official start, I just got going when everyone else did. It was a washing machine of elbows as we all merged into the racing line to swim out the 2.2 kilometres. My fate was sealed pretty quickly with so many people and a slow start. Without the skill and speed to move through the thick swarm, I eventually settled into a steady pace behind Has-To-Be-Size-11-Shoes, Mr. Arm Slap on my right and Neon Green Wetsuit Man on my left. Wi

One Year In: 70.3 World Champs

I was nervous the entire week leading up to the race, that was something that hadn’t changed. I was worried about where I needed to be at what time and with what, that everyone else had nicer bikes, about the possibility of finishing last. From my nutrition strategy to my swimming skills and everything in between, I was feeling insecure about everything. Other things had changed. I had an aggressive race strategy and the ambition to attempt it. I had come a long way in a year

The Comeback Kid: National Olympic Triathlon Champs

My wave…as in, my wave goodbye to everyone… I’ve been dropped in cycling races. I’ve been dropped in running races. I’ve been dropped in triathlons. It all feels the same. The disappointment drains through your body as you notice yourself sliding backwards through the pack,  there is (hopefully) that last ditch effort to hang in there, and then, as the gap grows quicker than ever, there is the realization that you’ve been left behind. I popped my yellow-capped head up in Lake

    Muskoka 70.3: Small Victories

“Why aren’t their carpets for my princess feet?” So many pine needles… I was a bit nervous on and off leading up to Muskoka 70.3 but it wasn’t until the announcer said “60 seconds to go” that my heart jumped into my throat and my stomach flipped. Everyone was chatting, even laughing, as I stared out to the first turn buoy, hardly visible in the morning fog. I just wanted to stay in the bunch as long as possible and not swim off course. Modest goals but necessary ones. The air

    I’m back. And I’m racing.

First race back: Triathlon des Gorges de l’Ardeche What’s longer than a year? 350 days of rehab. But I’m back. And I’m racing. It’s been almost a year since my last race. Frankly, I haven’t felt like much of an athlete because what’s athlete who doesn’t race? Even when I felt good enough to enter an event, I had pulled out of so many that I stopped thinking about racing all together. I just didn’t want to get my hopes up. But the long term plan toward building into triathlon

    A Day at the Races

It was a long way to drive for a small race but for amateur riders every chance is an opportunity. I squeezed in the car with four riders and ten wheels and, being the least entitled to leg room, I was in the middle. For almost four hours we drove in convoy, our Fiat with 250,000km struggling to keep up with the lead foot of the Direteur Sportif driving ahead with the rest of the team. Edward Greene, a South African racing for Team UC Aubenas We arrived in the small town of V

    3rd at National Duathlon Champs!

3rd at National Duathlon Champs! Last week I road tripped to Montreal, a cultural hub in the French speaking Canadian province of Quebec, for Canadian National Duathlon Champs. Montreal is notorious for road construction. Since the city centre is geographically an island, traffic flow is already pretty confusing for an out-of-towner with the intricate web of bridges that connect the downtown area to the rest of the city. Add in the constant road fixing and detours on make shi

Still Smiling: Age Group Duathlon World Championships 2013

Standing amid a sea of time trial bikes and aero helmets at bike check in, I suddenly felt like a roadie with a pair of running shoes. I felt overwhelmed, unprepared and majorly in over my head. I was the new kid on the block and, as I watched people move about transition with precision in preparation for the race, I felt like it. At least finding my bike during the race would be easy, I figured, since it seemed like the only road bike on the rack. I had arrived in Ottawa for
