There is the centre of Banyoles and then there is the heart of Banyoles. The identity of the small Catalan town revolves around the lake. Local paddlers to Olympic rowing teams decorate the surface from sunrise to sunset, the walking path around the perimeter is always host to walkers, runners and cyclists, and the handful of cafes are always catering to someone. It’s peaceful but full of life, like a communal backyard. Even though I was staying about ten kilometres outside of town, I too gravitated towards the lake. On foot, by bike, after the gym, before groceries, for coffee, to feed ducks, or just to sit back and take in the view.
